This tool visualizes spatial responsibility metrics for wildfire defensible space mitigation in a demonstration neighborhood. We assume defensible spaces can overlap property boundaries as 30-ft buffers (Zones 0 and 1 combined). We also use rate of spread (ROS) as a proxy of wildfire hazard to calculate responsibility values in our study. To note however, the responsibility metric is agnostic to the metric. Users can apply other risk metrics of their choice:
- PR — Personal Responsibility: Region of homeowner's own defensible space that lies on their own parcel and doesn't overlap any neighbor's defensible space.
- SR — Shared Responsibility: Region where two neighbors' defensible space buffers overlap, attributed to whichever parcel the overlap lies on.
- OR — Owed Responsibility: Region where homeowner's defensible space overlaps with neighbor's parcel, but not their defensible space (Directed links point toward whoever owes).
Each metric is reported both as area [ft²] and as area-weighted responsibility [ft³/min] (area × mean wildfire hazard).
How to use it:
- View: switch between the full neighborhood map (parcels, buildings, defensible-space buffers, PR/SR/OR region shapes) and a simplified directed network.
- Active network: choose SR or OR — controls both which directed links are drawn and which network the mitigation simulation runs on.
- Spatial responsibility: toggle PR/SR/OR region shading on or off independently, and switch between area and responsibility units.
- Click any building or node to see its stats and highlight its SR/OR connections.
- Mitigation simulation: pick a strategy (random, localized, targeted) and drag the slider to progressively remove links, tracking remaining total responsibility and active sub-networks.
